Chapter Eight

THE SORCERER

AND THE SORCERER’S

APPRENTICE

“Poetry embroidered magic, and transformed it into theology.…”

—WILL DURANT, THE STORY OF

CIVILIZATION: OUR ORIENTAL HERITAGE

When the song that Miriam and the women of Israel sang by the shores of the Red Sea finally ended, Moses rallied the Israelites for the next stage of their journey toward Canaan. The people lumbered to their feet, folded their tents and packed up their belongings, and trudged after him. Almost immediately, they found themselves in a predicament that threatened not only the success of their trek toward Canaan but their very survival in the wilderness.

And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. (Exod. 15:22)
